Loeb Secures Pro Bono Victories Restoring Honor and Benefits for Two Military Veterans

Loeb & Loeb is pleased to announce that two pro bono teams successfully secured life-changing outcomes for military veterans, restoring honor and long-overdue access to critical benefits from the Veterans Administration (VA), in 2025.

Loeb Secures $290,000 in Retroactive VA Benefits for Navy Veteran

In early 2025, after years of advocacy, a Loeb pro bono team achieved a major victory for a Navy veteran living with multiple sclerosis and blindness, securing a retroactive payment of $290,000 to cover medical expenses dating back to 2012. The team discovered that his original 2012 claim had never been properly addressed and successfully invoked a procedural mechanism requesting the VA to correct the effective date of the claim. Through persistent advocacy, the Loeb team obtained years of overdue compensation for the client and ensured he received the full benefits he deserved.

Loeb’s pro bono team included partner Steven Rosenthal, of counsel Eyvonne Mallett, senior counsel Scott Wilcox, associate Alexander Loh and paralegals Diane Harris, Patrycja Makles-Chuchro and Sunny Pak. In addition, partner Daniel Yarmish and associate Jennie Mooney assisted the client with creating a will following receipt of his benefits.

Loeb Secures Honorable Discharge Upgrade for Air Force Veteran

In the second case, a Loeb pro bono team successfully obtained a discharge upgrade for an Air Force veteran—from general (under honorable conditions) to honorable—before the Air Force Discharge Review Board. The veteran’s initial discharge status had been based on a false claim of misconduct, leading to ostracization, assault by superior officers and peers, and a significant decline in his mental health, culminating in a diagnosis of service-connected post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Loeb team presented compelling evidence, including medical opinions and lay statements, demonstrating that the original discharge was both improper and inequitable given his service-related PTSD. The upgrade restores his honor and provides access to benefits and recognition previously denied.

The Loeb pro bono team included partner Brian Heidelberger, senior counsel Scott Wilcox and associate Alexander Loh.

“Representing these two veterans was truly an honor,” said Alexander Loh. “Working closely across both teams and remaining committed to their cases allowed us to correct long-standing errors, set the record straight and help our clients finally receive the benefits, recognition and dignity they earned through their service.”
