A Perfectly Winding Road: Lessons From Alums Who Work Outside the Lines

Carol Kaplan, co-chair of Loeb & Loeb’s Theater & Live Entertainment Industry group, is quoted in the David Geffen School of Drama (DGSD) at Yale Annual Magazine in a feature spotlighting alumni working in entertainment beyond acting and playwriting. Carol reflects on how her background in playwriting informs and shapes her legal practice and her work across the theater and live entertainment industry.

“As a writer, when I’m struggling to break through an obstacle in a scene or a story, I often pull back and say, ‘How do I approach this from a completely different angle?’” Carol said. “I find myself making a similar assessment as a lawyer. If we’re negotiating something and we get stuck, I think, ‘Okay, let me step back and try to understand the real obstacle here, see if we can change the narrative around this point.’ That type of thinking can encourage both sides to find a new approach, to break through and reach a compromise.”
