“Reel Talk” Episode 5: Publishing's Next Chapter with Marc Chamlin

From BookTok and audiobooks to artificial intelligence and self-publishing, the book business is changing faster than ever. In the latest episode of Reel Talk: Inside the Business of Entertainment, I sat down with my Loeb & Loeb colleague Marc Chamlin, chair of the firm’s Literary Publishing and Television practices, to explore the forces reshaping the publishing industry and what they mean for authors, publishers and readers alike.

Marc shared insights from his decades-long career representing authors, literary agents, publishers and technology companies, and explained why publishing is thriving at a time when many predicted its decline. We discussed how the industry has evolved beyond the traditional advance-and-royalty model, with audiobooks, ebooks, revenue-sharing arrangements and self-publishing creating new opportunities for authors and publishers alike.

We also explored the forces reshaping how books are discovered, marketed and consumed. From BookTok-fueled bestsellers and grassroots publishing success stories to the growing influence of AI, Marc shared his perspective on the trends transforming the literary marketplace. While AI continues to raise important questions around copyright, licensing and ownership, he explained why authentic storytelling and uniquely human voices remain publishing's most valuable asset.

Our conversation also explored how community-driven recommendations are changing the path from manuscript to bestseller, why bookstores are reinventing themselves for a new generation of readers and what the future may hold for authors, publishers and content creators. Marc also recapped Loeb's second annual Literary Business and Law Conference, which brought together leaders from across the publishing, technology and legal sectors to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the industry's next chapter.
