Obtained Summary Judgment, and Fee Award for 21st Century Fox, Peter Chernin and Elizabeth Meriwether Relating to Fox Series New Girl

Obtained a summary judgment victory for 21st Century Fox, Inc., Peter Chernin, Elizabeth Meriwether and other defendants in a copyright suit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Los Angeles related to the Fox series New Girl. The plaintiffs, two screenwriters, claimed that the series infringed their copyrighted script for a motion picture. The court granted defendants’ motion for summary judgment, ruling that there was no evidence that the defendants saw or had access to the earlier script, or that the two works were substantially similar. (Counts, et al. v. Meriwether, et al.). After prevailing in the lawsuit, the Defendants also secured an award of attorneys’ fees under the Copyright Act.
