Technology: Legislators Fight Disinformation As Major Elections Approach

Loeb & Loeb Advanced Media & Technology partner Robyn Mohr is quoted in an article published by International Bar Association discussing the EU’s Digital Services Act which requires online service providers to proactively monitor for illegal content amid concerns over deepfakes and AI manipulation.

In the article, Robyn highlights the difficulties of spotting deepfakes and distinguishing between what is real and what is not, while commending the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) ban on robocalls that use AI-generated voices.

“My hope is that the FCC’s rule change serves as a signal that these types of behaviors have real consequences,” she says. “But, while a rule change is about as much as the FCC can do, I’m not sure it’s enough. Laws and rules are helpful, but industry also has a role to play here to help ensure their technologies are not being used in antidemocratic ways.”
