Loeb in the Community

One of the most powerful ways we express our “we’re all connected” philosophy is through meaningful service in the communities where we live and work. Below are highlights of some of our recent pro bono and diversity activities.

Loeb Welcomes Its First Chief Diversity Officer

In October 2021, Loeb welcomed the firm’s first chief diversity officer, Jennifer Davda, to our Los Angeles office. Jennifer will work closely with firm leadership to continue to build upon the firm’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I).

With more than 15 years of experience working in DE&I both as a lawyer and as a diversity and inclusion professional, Jennifer has founded and led programs that have supported the recruitment, retention and advancement of individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds in the legal profession. 2021 Tipping the Scales Recognition

Loeb was honored with the 2021 Tipping the Scales award by the Diversity & Flexibility Alliance in its 2021 New Partner Report. The recognition distinguishes firms that have 50% or more women in their new partner class, recognizing their commitment to the advancement of women. Of the nearly 200 law firms researched by the Alliance in this year’s report, only 67 firms had 50% or more women in their new partner class. Loeb was presented with the award during the Alliance’s virtual 2021 Annual Conference, “Reflect. Reimagine. Recalibrate. Paving the Way to Inclusive Flexibility.” on Nov. 3. Loeb Joins Diversity Lab’s OnRamp200 Initiative to Bring 200 Women Lawyers Back Into the Legal Profession by 2025

Loeb has partnered with Diversity Lab, an incubator for innovative ideas and solutions that boost diversity and inclusion in law, for its OnRamp 200 Fellowship initiative, which sets a new collective legal profession goal to bring 200 female lawyers who have taken a career hiatus back into the legal profession by 2025.

Initially launched 2014, Diversity Lab’s fellowship matches experienced lawyers with companies and law firms, including Loeb, for a yearlong paid fellowship. The first cohort of OnRamp 200 Fellows will start at Loeb and the other participating legal employers in February 2022. Click here to learn more.

Loeb and Legal Aid Achieve Pro Bono Victory in Employee Sexual Harassment Case

Loeb, alongside The Legal Aid Society, secured a $400,000 settlement for pro bono client Monica Cardenas, a former employee of the Automatic Meter Reading Corporation (AMRC), in an employee sexual harassment and hostile work environment case.

The legal battle against Jerome Fund, owner of AMRC, began in 2011 with the filing of a complaint with the New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR). During a three-year period, Ms. Cardenas was repeatedly harassed by Fund after being promoted to AMRC’s office manager in 2008 and becoming Fund’s direct report. Loeb was retained to enforce the monetary judgment that Ms. Cardenas received and to provide representation of Ms. Cardenas throughout the Surrogate’s Court proceeding concerning the solvency of Mr. Fund’s estate. After a decade-long uphill battle, Ms. Cardenas received a settlement of $400,000.

The Loeb pro bono team was led by Lindsay Feuer and included Gregory Schwed and Brandon Zamudio. Click here to learn more about their work in this case.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Clinic

On Thursday, Oct. 21, 13 lawyers from Loeb assisted individuals at our Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) clinic, held virtually. VLA is a New York-based legal aid nonprofit dedicated to supporting low-income artists, art and cultural organizations. Loeb volunteers participated in consultations with VLA pro bono clients with a variety of legal issues, including contract disputes, corporate advice and intellectual property concerns. Three consultation teams are continuing to support their clients beyond the clinic, adding additional support to these artists. Every year, Loeb hosts a clinic with VLA, and we are looking forward to future opportunities to support the arts community!

Adoption Day

Loeb lawyers partnered with the Alliance for Children’s Rights to provide pro bono services to families as part of the National Adoption Day program. Ten Loeb lawyers represented six families, helping them prepare and finalize adoption cases before the court. The Alliance for Children’s Rights Adoption Program helps finalize nearly one-third of all adoptions out of foster care in Los Angeles County. Many of these cases are finalized on designated “Adoption Days.” On these special days, the court devotes an entire afternoon to adoption hearings. Our lawyers prepared documentation to finalize adoptions and represented adoptive parents at unopposed hearings. Their work resulted in the adoption of seven children (including a sibling pair) by six families.
