Loeb & Loeb is pleased to announce that Michelle La Mar, chair of the firm’s Employment & Labor department, has been selected by the Daily Journal for inclusion in the publication’s annual list of the “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers” for 2023, which honors California’s “top attorneys who have made significant contributions to their field of practice.”
In the accompanying profile, Michelle is highlighted for her recent work in the case Slaight v. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., wherein she successfully defended Tata Consultancy Services, an India-based conglomerate, against accusations that it discriminated against non-South Asians in hiring for its U.S. operations.
According to the Daily Journal, Michelle has a particular focus on “representing Indian companies in employment disputes, particularly in pattern-and-practice cases, in which the issue is not how the employer treated any particular employee, but whether the company has policies that intentionally discriminate against a category of workers.”
“Do they [the employer] favor one group over another? And it’s a much easier test,” Michelle told the publication.
Michelle litigates class actions, single plaintiff cases, representative actions and collective actions in state and federal courts, as well as before arbitrators and administrative agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the California Civil Rights Department, the Federal Department of Labor and California’s Labor Commissioner. With a reputation for understanding client concerns and needs, she utilizes her litigation knowledge to fashion internal workplace strategies, policies and procedures that meet client goals and sidestep litigation. Michelle regularly helps numerous domestic and international companies navigate the complex and often confusing rules and regulations faced by employers in the U.S. She is keenly attuned to the additional struggles faced by international companies deploying or acquiring workforces in the U.S.
