Ivy Kagan Bierman, chair of Loeb & Loeb’s Entertainment Labor practice, is quoted in an article published by TheWrap discussing upcoming negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Hollywood studios, including the possibility that the guild may push to expand protections for staff writers and story editors.
“Currently, there are several requirements for writer-producers to qualify for span protections,” Ivy told the publication. She went on to add, “If the WGA is looking to expand that to all writers I would expect a lot of studio resistance as that would significantly increase TV budgets if the additional compensation that comes with span protections is multiplied across entire writers rooms in every production.”
