One of the most powerful ways we express our “We’re all connected” philosophy is through meaningful service in the communities where we live and work. Below are highlights of some of our recent pro bono and diversity activities.

Loeb Supports Domestic Violence Survivors in Partnership With Peace Over Violence

In September, Loeb began a partnership with Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit that supports survivors of domestic and interpersonal violence. This effort is part of Peace Over Violence’s Legal Advocacy Project that provides free, comprehensive legal services for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors and their families with legal issues in the areas of immigration and family law. Fourteen Loeb lawyers and paralegals volunteered to support four U visa cases, helping undocumented immigrants who were victims of domestic violence.

Loeb and Morgan Stanley Partner With HIAS to Help Ukrainian and Burmese Refugees

On Sept. 29, Loeb and Morgan Stanley joined for a virtual clinic with HIAS to support refugees from Ukraine and Myanmar with their applications for lawful permanent residence. Seven teams of Loeb and Morgan Stanley lawyers will be supporting nine clients, including a family of six from Ukraine and three Burmese refugees, as they prepare for the next stage of their immigration process. 

Loeb and Spotify Support Low-Income Artists With Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) Clinic

On Oct. 26, Loeb, in partnership with in-house counsel at Spotify, hosted a clinic with VLA, a leading legal aid and education organization dedicated to New York artists and its arts and cultural organizations. Nineteen Loeb and 10 Spotify lawyers participated in consultations with six clients, with issues ranging from contract disputes to intellectual property matters. Teams of Loeb and Spotify will assist several clients beyond the consultation to help resolve their legal issues. 

Loeb Achieves Victory for Pro Bono Client

Loeb secured a victory for a pro bono client who had filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and was later sued by a creditor in an adversary proceeding seeking to except a large debt from the client’s bankruptcy discharge, claiming that the contract had been induced by our client’s allegedly fraudulent statements and, therefore, that the debt was non-dischargeable. The case proceeded through two years of active litigation, and through its efforts, including in connection with a hard-hitting all-day deposition of the creditor’s senior executive, Loeb was able to demonstrate that the creditor’s claims were entirely without merit. While the case was pending, the bankruptcy court scheduled a court date to impose sanctions on the plaintiff for a series of calamitous discovery abuses that Loeb had called to the court’s attention. Ultimately, Loeb was able to negotiate a settlement for the client that was nothing short of a complete victory and one that allowed the client a much-needed fresh start after such a long and drawn-out proceeding.
