Loeb & Loeb Diversity and Inclusion Update – Summer 2012

Loeb & Loeb’s Workplace Diversity and Inclusion Committee has been engaged in a number of internal and external activities to help in the recruitment and retention of diverse attorneys, as well as to encourage and promote diversity within the legal and business community. We are proud to share our efforts and activities thus far in 2012.

Advancing Diversity – Where We’ve Been, What We’ve Supported

Loeb & Loeb was underwriter of the National Women’s Law Center 40th Anniversary Reception in Chicago. Special guests included Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Judith Rice, Senior Vice President of Community Affairs and Economic Development at BMO Harris Bank N.A., and Margaret Stender, Chairwoman and minority owner of the Women's National Basketball Association team the Chicago Sky.

Trusts and Estates partner Alyse N. Pelavin was a speaker at The Advocate Money Minute: Estate Planning for the LGBT Community in Los Angeles. The event, presented by The Advocate magazine and Wells Fargo, brought together some of the best LGBT estate planning financial leaders and legal experts for discussion and networking.

Loeb & Loeb was a sponsor of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s 11th Annual CLE Expo where partner Nerissa Coyle McGinn spoke on a panel titled “Online Behavioral Advertising Practices: Leveraging the Expertise of Technologies for Risk Assessment and Issue Spotting.”

Affinity Groups in Action

Loeb & Loeb’s four affinity groups – Attorneys of Color; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT); Parents; and Women – have been very active hosting and participating in firm and community-based events to foster inclusion and engagement.

The firm’s Parents Affinity Group has organized events in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago focused on saving for college and family financial planning. Our LGBT Affinity Group recently hosted the Financial Services Information Exchange (FSIX) for a cocktail reception and networking event that brought nearly 200 LGBT financial services industry executives together in our New York Office.

Since the beginning of the year, our Women’s Affinity Group has held a number of internal meetings and gatherings that have included a variety of guest speakers. In Los Angeles, we have hosted sessions led by a financial planner and a health and wellness expert. In Chicago, we have partnered quarterly with FTI Consulting on women’s networking events. The New York Women’s Initiative held a “Legal Mocktail” in which Loeb attorneys and clients participated in a fun training exercise on how to effectively network. Our New York Women’s Initiative also hosted a panel of in-house counsel for a roundtable event.

Loeb & Loeb’s Women Affinity Group is also is currently organizing a cocktail reception and clothing drive to benefit Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides professional clothing, career development services and ongoing support to low-income women. The event will take place in October at David Bouley Test Kitchen in New York.
