No Privacy for Vermont (for now)

On Thursday, Vermont Governor Phil Scott vetoed H.121, Vermont's consumer privacy bill, which included a limited private right of action and a kids code. Governor Scott cited the following reasons for his veto:

  • Business Impact: The Governor expressed concerns that the bill's “expansive definitions” could negatively impact Vermont businesses by imposing onerous requirements.
  • Legal Risks: He highlighted potential legal risks and uncertainties associated with the bill's provisions.
  • Balanced Approach: Governor Scott emphasized the need for a more balanced approach to consumer privacy that protects consumers without burdening businesses.

Governor Scott advocated for a law more like Connecticut’s. Press release here: https://governor.vermont.gov/press-release/action-taken-governor-phil-scott-legislation-june-13-2024
