Ryan Smith focuses his practice on privacy and data security law, particularly advising on issues involving adtech, edtech and emerging technologies. He counsels clients on complex privacy, cybersecurity and AI-related matters, guiding organizations through evolving state and federal privacy laws and regulations governing the collection, use and protection of data. His experience includes advising on incident response, data governance, online tracking technologies, consumer privacy compliance and regulatory inquiries, helping organizations balance regulatory obligations, operational realities and business objectives.  

Before entering private practice, Ryan served as counsel of compliance and policy at Network Advertising Initiative, a self-regulatory organization for the digital advertising industry. In this role, he supported nearly 100 companies in navigating an increasingly complex privacy and regulatory landscape. Ryan also advised on compliance strategies involving consumer choice, children’s privacy, sensitive data and emerging state privacy laws, while helping develop industry standards and best practices. In addition, he worked closely with regulators and policymakers, contributing to industry responses to significant legislative and regulatory developments.
