Two Loeb Lawyers Receive Northern District of Illinois’ 2022 Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award

Loeb & Loeb is pleased to announce that Litigation partner Laura McNally and associate Marwa Abdelaziz received the 2022 Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Laura and Marwa were nominated for the pro bono award by Magistrate Judge Susan E. Cox of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The annual recognition honors lawyers who have demonstrated a dedication to pro bono and public interest representation, specifically pertaining to criminal and civil matters. Laura was presented with the award during the Northern District of Illinois' awards ceremony in the James Benton Parsons Ceremonial Courtroom of the Everett McKinley Dirksen United States Courthouse in Chicago on June 1, 2022.

Laura and Marwa received the pro bono award for representing a woman at a settlement conference in a case filed by a pension fund, which alleged that the client had received more than $100,000 from her parents in fraudulent transfers. The pension fund claimed that the parents had fraudulently conveyed pension fund assets to their daughter in the form of cash, tuition payments, rent payments and other transfers for other personal expenses. After a thorough investigation, Laura and Marwa developed factual defenses to nearly all of the claims. For example, much of the disputed amounts were legitimate payments for work performed at the parents’ business. Other funds were never actually provided to our client. And yet other claims were outside the statute of limitations. As a result of this work, Laura and Marwa were able to negotiate a favorable settlement and payment plan for the client.
