Wearables Technology Data Use in Professional Sports

By 2019 the wearable technology industry is expected to be worth in excess of $53 billion, which is a more than 11-fold increase over 2014 sales.  “Pro sports leagues and teams will continue to grapple with important issues-privacy, data security and ownership, and labour concerns, as the applicable body of ‘law’ – rules established through collective bargaining agreements, regulations enacted by governing bodies, legislation developed in countries around the world, and the inevitable litigation- takes shape around the collection, use and distribution of information gleaned from wearable technology.”  

This article addresses the evolution of the use of wearable technology in professional sports.  As the demand of this valuable information increases, important questions are raised concerning the legal challenges that this new market represents.
