More Than Half of Employers to Require COVID 19 Vaccines as Omicron Fears Grow

Loeb New York Employment & Labor chair Ian Carleton Schaefer is quoted in an article by CNBC discussing disruptions to return-to-work plans caused by the new COVID-19 Omicron variant. Most U.S. employers are planning to implement vaccine mandates as a contingency to return to the office. 

According to a Willis Towers Watson survey of 543 employers, 57% of all organizations said that they plan to require or already require vaccinations for workers, with 18% of this group already having a mandate in place and 7% planning to do so. Another 32% will do so if OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) is put into effect. The federal government’s ETS vaccination and testing policy, which would require businesses with over 100 employees to mandate employees to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing for COVID-19, has been temporarily halted. 

Even without the government’s shot mandate “nothing is precluding employers with moving ahead with their own version,” Ian told CNBC. “As employers are pushing to reopen, they are likely going to get more aggressive with their own policies, regardless of what happens.”

“The balance of power is in flux now,” Ian added. “A lot depends on the company, the industry and biography.
