Loeb & Loeb Expands Beijing Office with Addition of Venture Capital/Emerging Companies Partner Benjamin Qiu

BEIJING – Loeb & Loeb LLP announced today that Benjamin Qiu has joined the law firm as a partner in the Beijing, China, office. Qiu will be part of the firm’s Capital Markets and Corporate Department with a focus on venture capital financings for emerging companies, particularly software and Internet ventures.

“Ben’s background and considerable experience with tech-oriented venture financings, as well as technology licensing and IP protection, perfectly complements Loeb’s interdisciplinary strengths in the media and technology sectors,” said Mitchell S. Nussbaum, co-chair of Loeb & Loeb’s Capital Markets and Corporate Department and chair of the firm’s Asia Practice. “As venture capital continues to flow into early-stage Chinese enterprises, and Chinese private equity dollars make a greater impact on the U.S.-based emerging company market, Ben’s skillset will be a very strategic addition to our practice team.”

“Our presence in Asia remains an important anchor in Loeb’s international practice footprint, particularly in the area of corporate finance. Ben will add great value to our clients in China and the U.S. and we are pleased to welcome him,” added Loeb & Loeb Chairman Michael D. Beck.

Most recently, Qiu was resident in the Shanghai office of Cooley LLP, where he focused on venture financing and fund management, intellectual property counseling and protection for emerging growth clients. Previously, he was Senior Counsel and Fund Director at Innovation Works, an investment fund and start-up incubator for companies in the mobile computing, e-commerce and cloud computing sectors. In addition to founding the legal team of Innovation Works, Qiu supervised the formation of numerous early-stage technology companies and their subsequent financing rounds. He negotiated financing terms on behalf of Innovation Works and its portfolio companies, and he advised the companies on corporate governance and technology protection and licensing.

Prior to Innovation Works, Qiu was resident in the Beijing and Shanghai offices of Lovells LLP, where he focused on intellectual property asset development and enforcement in China on behalf of multinational companies.

Qiu is a native Mandarin speaker and a frequent speaker at local and international conferences on the subject of venture capital, the start-up company environment, intellectual property and digital privacy.

“Loeb is one of the go-to firms for tech companies and investors,” said Qiu. “There is great synergy between my practice and many other practice disciplines at the firm that are servicing companies in the media, technology and information services arenas. I look forward to further strengthening the firm’s active practice in China and working with a sophisticated team of colleagues in Beijing, Hong Kong and throughout the U.S.”
