Carol Kaplan Joins Loeb & Loeb's Entertainment Department in New York

NEW YORK – Loeb & Loeb LLP is pleased to announce that Carol M. Kaplan has joined the firm’s nationally recognized Entertainment Department as a partner in the New York office. Most recently, she was a partner in the Entertainment and New Media and Intellectual Property and Technology practices of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP.

Kaplan focuses her practice in live theater, working with principals at all levels – from well-established and first-time producers to not-for-profit theaters and commercial theater financiers – in the development, production and exploitation of live stage properties. She also represents clients on the creative and content side of transactions, such as writers, directors, producers, underlying rights holders, and others in connection with license and services agreements.

Seth D. Gelblum, Chair of the firm’s Theater Practice said, “Carol has extensive experience with the creative and production issues that arise in the theater, and this experience informs her sophisticated understanding of the industry’s legal issues in a unique manner that benefits all of her clients.”

Loeb & Loeb LLP Chairman Michael D. Beck added, “The addition of Carol to our team of legal talent here in New York is a boon for us, further cementing the firm’s unmatched media and entertainment footprint on both coasts. This move underscores our ongoing commitment to maintaining one of the world’s top practices servicing institutions and individuals across all segments of the entertainment industry.”

Kaplan’s practice also covers film, television, new media and publishing, and she holds significant experience advising on licensing, acquisition, disposition, financing and exploitation of intellectual property assets across multiple platforms. In addition, she advises clients on intellectual property issues, website terms of use and privacy policies, and other Internet- and technology-related matters. Her clients outside of the live theater space include independent film and television producers, film studios and media companies, authors, and film and television talent, as well as content creators and owners in the entertainment industry, the educational field and the non-profit sector.

Prior to her law firm career, Kaplan served as a production attorney in the business and legal affairs department at Nickelodeon, handling rights acquisition and creative services agreements, as well as production agreements for serial and long form television.

“Carol is the full package – bringing considerable experience in theater, film and TV, including valuable in-house perspective from working on the client side,” commented Craig A. Emanuel, chair of Loeb & Loeb’s Entertainment Department. “As technology and social media platforms continue to evolve and reshape the industry landscape, she is also well-equipped to help our clients adapt, capitalize on new opportunities and protect their rights. Her strengths complement many areas of our entertainment and advanced media practice, making her a great asset to the firm and our clients.”

“Loeb & Loeb’s entertainment practice is best in class, particularly in the live theater world, and I’m thrilled to join this elite group of lawyers,” said Kaplan. “The firm’s incredible bench of talent and impressive service platform in New York and nationally will be a tremendous advantage for my clients.”

A member of the New York bar, Kaplan earned her J.D., cum laude, Order of the Coif, from New York University School of Law where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama and her bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the Universities of Natal and Cape Town in South Africa.
