New York City Removes Vaccine Requirement for Private Employers

Ian Carleton Schaefer, chair of Loeb & Loeb’s New York Employment & Labor practice, is quoted in an SHRM article discussing New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ recently announced plan to no longer require private employers to direct workers to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

According to the article, Eric Adams cited new bivalent boosters and 89% of New York City’s residents who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for stating that it was time to usher in flexibility for parents and businesses. "Businesses up until this point have had mixed approaches about whether or not a vaccine mandate is even relevant at this point, given that most employers have not been tracking the rate at which employees have been boosted," Ian told the publication.

“Today's announcement, following on the heels of announcements of other financial institutions and employers who unilaterally ended their own vaccine mandates, is an effort to reinvigorate New York City and revitalize the economic infrastructure, bringing normalcy to the workplace after almost three years of disruption,” Ian added.
