Judge Rules Sharks' Evander Kane Must Face Discovery in Lawsuit

Loeb & Loeb Restructuring & Bankruptcy partner Schuyler Carroll spoke with The Athletic about a lawsuit against Evander Kane, a hockey player at the San Jose Sharks and who filed for personal bankruptcy. In the case, a federal bankruptcy judge recently gave approval for discovery in the lawsuit filed by Kane’s former girlfriend, Hope Parker, who alleges Kane reneged on a promise to pay her at least $2 million.

“To use a boxing analogy, this is the first round in this litigation,” Schuyler told the publication. “There are still nine rounds left to be fought. Parker won this round, but she still has a long way to go. Having said that, because so much of bankruptcy is resolved by settlement, a ruling like this often leads to settlement discussions.”
