Loeb & Loeb Achieves Pro Bono Victory in Political Asylum Case

LOS ANGELES - Loeb & Loeb LLP is pleased to announce that attorneys Laura A. Wytsma and Patrick N. Downes succeeded in obtaining political asylum for a prominent Syrian couple that fled the oppressive regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The pro bono case was jointly handled by Loeb & Loeb in conjunction with Public Counsel’s Immigrant’s Rights Project.

The clients fled their homeland in 2011 after facing persecution by al-Assad’s regime. While in the United States they have taken public stances in opposition to the Syrian government and sought to raise awareness about the atrocities being perpetrated by the regime.

Loeb & Loeb’s attorneys represented the couple during their interviews with the Los Angeles Asylum Office of the United States Customs and Immigration Service. The government ultimately determined that the couple had a well-founded fear of future persecution based on their political opinions and dissent from the Syrian government, resulting in a grant of asylum.

Loeb & Loeb has represented asylum seekers from across the globe, including Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mexico, El Salvador and Kenya, among other nations, who are fleeing persecution or domestic abuse. The firm’s pro bono work with Public Counsel has resulted in several significant victories before the immigration courts, and helped numerous individuals avoid deportation and the threat of violence or death in their native countries.
