Wearable Technology in Professional Sports: Big Money, Big Data, Big Problems

“Wearable fitness technology is everywhere in sports these days.” Loeb & Loeb Partner, Brian Socolow discusses the recent trend in wearable technology and how people are using this technology to reduce injuries, aid performance, improve coaching within professional sports leagues. Every U.S. professional sports league has applied some form of wearable technology programs and has incorporated the new data analytics.  The question now is, “Where does pro sports go from here?” The technology has far surpassed the development rules and regulations on its use. Teams and leagues will have to struggle with questions unique to pro sport, and in others, such as privacy and intellectual property, the growing body of law surrounding the development and use of wearable technology will inform and shape pro sports reaction to these challenges.
