Loeb & Loeb Strengthens Patent Litigation Practice with Addition of Partner Terry Garnett in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – Loeb & Loeb LLP announced today that leading patent and IP litigator Terry Garnett has joined the firm’s Los Angeles office as a partner.

Garnett brings more than 20 years of experience defending and prosecuting patent infringement actions in federal courts across the country. He has litigated more than 35 patent cases involving a wide variety of technologies, from simple mechanical devices to complex semi-conductors, computer architecture, LCD and other display devices, software, business methods, and medical devices. He also has extensive experience negotiating and drafting patent licenses and advising clients in connection with the purchase or transfer of patent rights.

“Terry’s arrival extends the range of legal services we offer our clients from California,” said Loeb & Loeb Chairman Michael D. Beck. “We have invested in expanding our national IP platform and this significant addition demonstrates our commitment to excellence in a key area of practice for the firm.”

Garnett has tried cases throughout the United States, including popular patent venues such as Delaware, East Texas and Western Wisconsin. His clients include Hewlett Packard, Quanta Computer, Inc., HTC and AU Optronics. Notably, Garnett has represented Quanta in several precedent-setting matters, including Quanta’s dispute with LG Electronics that ended in a 9-0 Supreme Court victory for Quanta on the issue of patent exhaustion, and Quanta’s lawsuit with LaserDynamics that resulted in an often-cited Federal Circuit decision in the area of patent damages.

“Considered one of California’s top IP litigators, Terry’s impressive track record and sophisticated technical knowledge will be a great asset to clients operating in the computer technology and related industries,” added Mark E. Waddell, Chair of Loeb & Loeb’s Patent Litigation and Counseling Department. “His long-running representation of Asian companies in patent infringement and enforcement matters will also extend Loeb’s reach in this important region.”

Formerly a partner at Goodwin Procter LLP and Paul Hastings LLP, Garnett earned his J.D. from the University of California at Los Angles School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He serves as a member of the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association and the Litigation and Intellectual Property sections of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. Garnett has been listed as one of the top 75 IP litigators in California by the Daily Journal and was also recognized by The Legal 500 U.S.

“Loeb has a strong reputation in all areas of IP and I’m excited to bring my practice to the firm,” said Garnett. “I look forward to working with such a well-regarded group of colleagues in L.A. and across the country.”

The addition of Garnett to Loeb & Loeb’s Patent Litigation and Counseling Practice follows the recent arrival of senior counsel Andrew R. Smith and David Newman who joined the firm’s Chicago office in the second half of 2014. Loeb & Loeb’s national team of nearly 25 patent attorneys and professionals has litigated infringement, validity and enforceability of patents in every technology field, and represents clients from around the world in all manner of patent disputes, as well as patent prosecution and strategic counseling.
