Loeb & Loeb Forms Emerging Media and Technology Practice Group

LOS ANGELES and NEW YORK – Today Loeb & Loeb LLP announced the launch of a new practice group, the Emerging Media and Technology Practice Group, which has been formed to serve new media and technology clients and traditional media clients entering the space. The national team will be comprised of almost 20 attorneys from the firm’s New York, Chicago and Los Angeles offices with expertise in new media, technology, entertainment, patent, trademark and intellectual property law. The firm has one of the largest multidisciplinary media and technology practices in the world combined with nationally recognized intellectual property and advertising law attorneys. Loeb & Loeb’s new practice group is rooted in the firm’s legacy as one of the oldest and most respected legal counsel to the media and entertainment industry.

Media and advertising law partner Ken Florin will chair the Emerging Media and Technology Practice Group. He says, “The formalization of this team of attorneys recognizes the unique amalgamation of legal talent we have at Loeb to serve clients involved in every aspect and type of new media venture.”

In 2007, Loeb & Loeb represented Comcast in a multimillion-dollar display advertising placement deal with Yahoo!, which tech blogger Mark Cuban (blogmaverick.com) called the Internet 2.0 deal of the year. The deal makes Yahoo! the sales representative to national buyers for the majority of display advertising on the Comcast.net website. Attorneys on the team also obtained a preliminary injunction on behalf of Comcast, which halted the airing of two major national advertising campaigns by rival DIRECTV.

Team attorneys have been involved in other cutting-edge transactions at the convergence of media and technology:

  • Establishing a wireless platform for one of the nation’s largest banks
  • The first ringtone download agreements in the country
  • Matters involving digital downloading, digital content aggregations, P2P distribution and Webcasting
  • Development of the largest user generated content platform
  • Branded entertainment deals
  • Online service joint ventures between content producers, advertisers and Internet/mobile distribution platforms
  • Development of first alternate reality online game for large advertiser
  • Acquisitions of startup tech companies with new content distribution technologies, such as blogs, mobisodes, websites and chatrooms
  • Addressing complex international privacy issues arising out of long-term international online promotional initiatives

Loeb & Loeb Co-Chairman, John Frankenheimer said, “The range of work we’ve been doing in the space speaks to our qualifications and capacities in the field. There’s no part of the business we haven’t touched.”

“Our lawyers have grown with the industry refining their skills to match our new media clients’ rapid business evolution,” added Michael Beck, Loeb & Loeb Co-Chairman.

Loeb & Loeb’s Emerging Media and Technology Practice Group’s capabilities also include:

  • Counseling of clients regarding Internet business and interactive media regulation
