Partner
Laura Wytsma’s practice focuses on intellectual property proceedings in federal court, with an emphasis on patent and appellate litigation. In addition to intellectual property matters, Ms. Wytsma’s broad litigation experience includes representations involving claims for false advertising and Lanham Act violations; defamation; violation of privacy and publicity rights; and complex commercial disputes. She has significant trial and appellate experience in federal proceedings.
Ms. Wytsma is actively involved in pro bono litigation and has represented over a dozen refugees seeking asylum from China, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Iran, Mexico, Russia, and Syria, as well as victims of domestic violence, in Immigration Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
Prior Work Experience
Prior to joining Loeb, Ms. Wytsma was a partner in the Los Angeles office of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP. While there, she earned the firm's Pro Bono Leadership Award in 2005. She began her legal career as a Trial Attorney in the Attorney General’s Honors Program at the United States Department of Justice.

Successfully defended Hillerich & Bradsby Co. (Louisville Slugger®) as lead trial counsel in patent infringement action, securing summary judgment of noninfringement which was affirmed on appeal after she argued the case before the Federal Circuit.

Represent Marilyn Monroe LLC in highly publicized litigation involving Marilyn Monroe’s post-mortem right of publicity.

Successfully defended the National Collegiate College Association against defamation claims by Rodney Guillory related to NCAA enforcement proceedings involving the University of Southern California and former USC student-athlete O.J. Mayo.

Successfully argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to secure reversal of immigration removal order and ultimately obtained asylum on behalf of an Iranian woman who had been beaten and detained by Iranian authorities as a result of her daughter’s journalism work.

Secured summary judgment of antitrust claims for Illinois Tool Works Inc., ultimately resulting in the U.S. Supreme Court’s elimination of the per se patent tying doctrine in Independent Ink, Inc. v. Illinois Tool Works Inc., 547 U.S. 28 (2006).

Defeated preliminary injunction motion seeking to enjoin sales of George Forman rotisseries based on strong showing of noninfringement.
