Loeb & Loeb Celebrates 15 Years of Growth and Success in DC

Tell us about your earliest memories of Loeb’s Washington, DC, office. How was it started?

Loeb & Loeb’s DC office had a bit of a whirlwind start with a quick transition from my previous firm. As we adjusted to the change, firm administration and a hiring partner, along with the IT Department, sprang into action. They quickly secured temporary office space, set up phone and fax services, integrated us into the firm’s network and transformed an empty space into Loeb’s first DC location. Their efforts were incredibly successful, and our clients experienced a smooth transition to Loeb. It was quite an experience but one that stands out when I reflect on the start of the DC office.

Reflecting on the past 15 years, how has the DC office evolved?

What started as a single-practice office has now grown substantially to include lawyers from a diverse group of practices.

We have a strong Litigation practice that includes representation of several major public-sector entities. Recently, our team represented an environmental agency in its trial involving oil platform decommissioning. Our Antitrust team successfully invoked the doctrine of state-action immunity on behalf of one of the largest public power utilities, leading to the dismissal of an antitrust action alleging violations of the Sherman and Clayton acts.

With respect to private client matters, our Trusts and Estates lawyers assist high net worth individuals and families with navigating complex and sophisticated estate and income tax planning matters. We also have expanded to serve as strategic business and legal counsel for numerous nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations.

Over the past decade, Loeb has built a strong team, including many lawyers in the DC office, that focuses on advising on the complex issues related to data privacy, digital marketing, advertising and e-commerce. This includes everything from interest-based and addressable advertising to data analytics, location-based tracking, smart devices and wearables, and the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality and facial recognition.

Our office is also home to a thriving FDA Regulatory & Compliance practice that counsels clients on complex regulatory strategies and compliance matters. This includes representing clients in administrative and judicial enforcement actions and other proceedings involving the Food & Drug Administration, the Federal Trade Commission, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Justice and other federal and state agencies.

The firm’s Energy practice is also centered in DC, assisting clients throughout North America with energy-related matters. This ranges from sophisticated transactions and strategic counseling to complex federal court litigation and more routine rate matters at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and state agencies.

Finally, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, our DC office added Capital Markets to its core capabilities. Since then, our DC Capital Markets team has closed over 20 public and private securities offerings (helping clients raise more than $2 billion) and 12 mergers and business combination transactions, with several more pending.

We are proud of the growth the DC office has experienced over the past 15 years and are excited to see what’s next as our services evolve to meet client and market needs.

What is something unique to your office that sets it apart from other Loeb offices?

The experience of working here is unique, as it combines the camaraderie and warmth of a boutique firm with the resources, brand recognition and supportive platform of a global law firm. We also have a diverse group of lawyers and staff who enjoy gathering, whether to celebrate birthdays and career milestones or to learn from a guest speaker. As an office, we have cultivated a remarkable sense of shared community.

Are there any initiatives that tie you closely to the DC community?

I am proud of how actively engaged our office is with the community. We seize opportunities to connect with small groups of clients and colleagues while supporting organizations such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and N Street Village. Many of us have participated in the Lawyers Have Heart 5k and 10k races to benefit the American Heart Association. Additionally, this year, we celebrated Black History Month with a trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture and attended college basketball games when the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament came to Capital One Arena.

One of the most memorable moments for me was when our office served as a hub for the March For Our Lives organization. Lawyers in our Nonprofits & Tax-Exempt Organizations, Advanced Media & Technology and Litigation practice groups supported the student activists from Parkland, Florida, as they launched their gun violence prevention movement with a historic march in DC on March 24, 2018. For months, our conference rooms served as gathering spots for staff training programs, strategy sessions and board meetings.

These are just a few of the ways our office remains rooted in our community, actively supporting causes and initiatives that matter to us and those we serve.

Where do you see Loeb’s DC office heading from here?

The DC office continues to grow not only by adding additional capabilities to our existing practice areas but also by introducing new DC-centric practices. While the firm remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding in DC, we aim to do so in a manner that preserves the close-knit working relationships among our lawyers and staff. This approach ensures that we maintain the collaborative spirit and cohesion that define our office culture.
