Overview

Jonathan Thielbar focuses his practice on helping clients develop, protect, and monetize their technology, with an emphasis on patent procurement, strategic counseling, and patent threat assessment/defense. His engineering background provides valuable insight into his clients’ electronic, mechanical, artificial intelligence (AI), and other software innovations at all stages of development. This technical knowledge, combined with his thorough understanding of US and international patent office procedures, allows Jonathan to help grow and maintain his clients’ patent portfolios in lockstep with broader business goals.

Jonathan advises clients of all sizes, both helping start-up companies strategically hone mission-critical intellectual property and counseling large, publicly traded companies in cultivating and managing extensive patent portfolios domestically and internationally. He has experience in a wide range of industries, including artificial intelligence (AI), immersive virtual reality, green technology, heavy machinery, medical devices, payment systems, product manufacturing, sporting goods and equipment, computer software and security, database management, and home appliances.

He has represented clients in all phases of patent litigation in federal District Court and in post-grant procedures in front of the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB), including pre-suit investigations and negotiations, inter partes review (IPR), covered business method review (CBMR), preliminary injunction proceedings, discovery and appeals. He has also represented a variety of clients in contractual agreements ranging from technology joint-venture projects to large-scale patent licenses.

Jonathan also dedicates time to helping Loeb & Loeb’s pro bono clients and serves on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. He has helped in-need clients protect their creative works and clear their criminal records, and has helped asylum-seekers apply for permanent residence.

When not practicing law, Jonathan enjoys adventures with his young family, practicing guitar, playing golf on the rare occasions he can get away, and working to satisfy his lifelong curiosity for new and interesting technologies.
