Lawyers for Children Honors Loeb & Loeb for Pro Bono Service
Loeb & Loeb’s attorneys contribute to the enrichment and growth of the legal profession by being actively involved in the communities in which we work and live. We frequently donate our time and experience to help those who otherwise would be unable to afford legal assistance.
We have a long and proud history of commitment to corporate philanthropy and pro bono activities, ranging from founder Joseph Loeb’s successful reform of the Los Angeles County Bar Association to Herman Selvin’s persuasive United States Supreme Court advocacy that prevented the repeal of California’s fair housing laws.
We were honored with the California State Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for our work representing individuals seeking asylum in the U.S. based on political or ethnic persecution, or domestic abuse. The award recognized a series of significant victories that the firm achieved on behalf of asylum seekers from around the globe, helping them reunite with their families and avoid the threat of violence or death in their native countries.
Loeb & Loeb also has a particularly strong commitment to pro bono activities on behalf of children and represents such organizations as the Children’s Aid Society, Children’s Rights, the Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies (COFCCA), Hope for Youth, Lawyers for Children and Jewish Family Service. As part of our dedication to the protection of neglected and abused children, we established the Loeb & Loeb Child Advocacy Fellowship at Lawyers for Children, one of the nation’s leading providers of free legal and social work services for children.
Through the firm’s Veterans Assistance Project, Loeb & Loeb attorneys are also committed to providing pro bono assistance to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who are seeking disability benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Our legacy of pro bono achievements includes some of the most important civil rights and civil liberties litigation of recent decades. In past years, Loeb & Loeb has been honored for our work in helping overturn the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ 1981 redistricting plan on the grounds that it unconstitutionally discriminated against the county’s three million Latino residents. This resulted in the election of a Latina – the first woman ever elected to the board and the first Hispanic to serve on that powerful body in 115 years.
The firm was recognized by the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) for our work defending the rights of Central American immigrants and by JFS of Los Angeles for successful litigation that permitted an important battered women’s shelter to continue operating. We were also instrumental in assisting another pro bono client, Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), in formulating and achieving passage of The Songwriters Capital Gains Tax Equity Act, designed to help American songwriters receive fair tax treatment upon the ultimate sale of their creations.
The following are among the many other organizations we represent on a pro bono basis:
